GROHE expands Cradle to Cradle Certified® portfolio offering sustainable products with minimal impact

  • GROHE’s Cradle to Cradle Certified® product portfolio is part of the journey towards a circular economy that seeks to transform the global waste crisis.
  • Two new product certifications extend the GROHE Cradle to Cradle Certified® range, which provides the use of product components even after a product’s end-of-life phase.
  • The expansion of the resource-saving product range includes filters for the GROHE Blue water system and the Tempesta hand shower.

London, October 2022 – The principle of a circular economy is on everyone's lips, and yet most economic processes still run in a linear fashion, raw materials are depleted to manufacture products that end up as waste after use. These materials are often not utilised again in the supply chain and not only exhaust resources beyond the means of the planet, but also pollute the environment. As the building sector accounts for about 50% of all extracted material [1], the construction industry and policy makers alike face a major challenge; solutions are required to be innovative and future-proof along the entire supply chain.

One of these solutions is the Cradle to Cradle Certified® design concept employed by GROHE, a leading global brand for complete bathroom solutions and kitchen fittings. The Cradle to Cradle Certified® (C2C Certified) products enable circular creation and minimise resource overconsumption by providing the opportunity to keep material flows in recycling streams. Independently tested and certified, C2C Certified products are a crucial step towards a resource-saving future – both for the construction industry and for individual consumers.

What makes the Cradle to Cradle Certified® design concept special is that products are designed and manufactured with the intention of using their components in their end-of-life phase to create new products. This turns the linear creation process into a circular one. In 2021, with the launch of four Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold products, GROHE opened up its offering to consumers and the entire construction industry, facilitating circular product solutions in the home and bathroom for the first time. The next step is the expansion of the C2C Certified portfolio of GROHE’s bestsellers to include further products that promote a sustainable, resource-conserving, and eco-conscious lifestyle.

GROHE's Cradle to Cradle Certified® now includes six sustainable solutions, with the GROHE Tempesta two spray hand shower and the GROHE Blue filters from supplier BWT newly certified at Bronze level. In the course of the filter’s lifecycle, GROHE collects the used filters and passes them on to BWT, where 99% of the materials are recycled. The addition of C2C certification for the filters provides the GROHE Blue water system, which offers chilled, filtered, and sparkling water direct from the kitchen tap without the need to use plastic bottles, with yet another sustainability benefit.

“The exhaustion of our planet’s limited and stressed resources is forcing us all to drive change. With the expansion of our Cradle to Cradle Certified® product portfolio, we are reaching, step by step, the next, logical level in utilising the potential of the circular economy. Our growing C2C Certified range enables our customers to easily implement resource-protecting interior choices without compromising on comfort or design. The next facilitates sustainable buildings and helps planners and architects to contribute to green building rating systems,” says Jonas Brennwald, Leader LIXIL EMENA.
