The bathroom - a regenerative space
Reimagining the modern bathroom: a regenerative space
As the modern bathroom evolves from a purely functional space to a personal sanctuary, design plays a crucial role in shaping this transformation. Patrick Speck, Leader, LIXIL Global Design, EMENA, is at the forefront of reimagining bathrooms as regenerative spaces. In this interview, Patrick shares his insights on the latest trends in bathroom design and how GROHE is innovating to create immersive, mindful experiences.
1. What do you see as the most significant trend in bathroom design?
Patrick Speck: With an increased awareness of well-being, design trends have shifted towards solutions and spaces that promote relaxation and mindfulness. This shift mirrors the evolving role of the bathroom, once a utilitarian space, now seen as a sanctuary for self-care and revitalization. Early indications of this trend are now gaining momentum, with the bathroom being reimagined as a regenerative space – a place for immersive experiences rather than just functional use.
2. How can such a “regenerative space” be created?
Patrick Speck: Since self-care is inherently personal, customization is key. Showers, for example, can cater to different moods with various spray types, while design options allow users to craft their ideal wellness retreat. The GROHE Rainshower Aqua Pure system exemplifies this, as it comes with various adjustable features and is available in the full range of the GROHE Colors Collection paired with either white or black glass accents, allowing for a tailored aesthetic.
3. How can product design contribute to shaping an experience?
Patrick Speck: For me, it’s all about the nuances. Sophisticated details can significantly enhance the overall experience. For our new GROHE SmartControl thermostat, we have designed metal push buttons, seamlessly integrated in the thermostatic body, that subtly emerge when activated. The knurled texture of the buttons adds a tactile dimension, creating a multisensory interaction. It’s a small feature, but it elevates the entire showering experience by engaging multiple senses.
4. Since regenerative spaces stem from the wellness trend, how do you see wellness influencing design choices?
Patrick Speck: The wellness trend has sparked the rise of biophilic design, which aims to reconnect people with nature. On a product level, we draw inspiration from natural elements – whether from organic shapes or sensations like an encompassing head shower that mimics the feeling of warm summer rain. Additionally, we incorporate wellness-supporting features, such as the integrated filter of GROHE Rainshower Aqua Pure, which purifies the water of the hand shower by removing chlorine and odor, making it gentler on the skin and hair, enhancing well-being.
5. Speaking of nature, what role does sustainability play in a regenerative space?
Patrick Speck: Sustainability plays a crucial role. Mindfulness isn’t just about caring for oneself; it’s about being conscious of the environment too. That’s why, even in premium products like GROHE Rainshower Aqua Pure, we incorporate water-saving technologies to offer users peace of mind without compromising on experience or aesthetics.
