Clerkenwell Design Week Recap

United by common sustainability brand values, industry leading designs and craftmanship, GROHE and Mosa have partnered to celebrate Clerkenwell Design week, showcasing changes towards a more sustainable and circular future.

Making a return to Clerkenwell Design Week after 2 years, GROHE and Mosa provided a thought-provoking week full of talks, gatherings and CPDs from the Mosa London showroom. The week of festivities to paint the town gold in celebration of Cradle to Cradle, the most ambitious standard for products that enable a healthy, equitable and sustainable future started off with an exclusive event for Architects and Designers with Prof. Dr. Michael Braungart, the founder of the Cradle to Cradle design concept. The evening featured a keynote by Dr Michael Braungart on C2C as a pathway for sustainable design and Manufacturing along with talks from Patrick Speck, Leader LIXIL Global Design EMENA and Frank Spikker, CEO Mosa on sustainability in design. 

Patrick Speck, Leader Global Design, LIXIL EMENA, said: “With our Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold Level accredited products, we’re placing a higher focus on working towards a circular economy and increasing awareness around the global waste crisis. As a leading manufacturer, it’s imperative we drive the transformation and innovative practices needed to mobilise the whole industry in becoming more sustainable and circular. We are pleased that the topic of sustainability is pushing further up the agenda and look forward to engaging in a dialogue with other industry leaders at Clerkenwell design week alongside Mosa.”

The week continued with an amazing circular economy presentation from Circular Design Specialist, 540 World on Cradle to Cradle Certified world-firsts and CPD modules exploring the Cradle to Cradle concept and how the industry leaders can integrate circularity into their projects were also available to showroom visitors. Ending the week in style, GROHE and Mosa ended the week with an amazing closing party to show appreciation to the local design community for celebrating the joint Gold achievements all week long.

Michael Braungart

Founder, Cradle to Cradle Design Concept

Leuphana University Lüneburg, Braungart EPEA – Internationale Umweltforschung Hamburg. Michael Braungart is professor at the Leuphana University Lüneburg and founder of EPEA, Environmental Protection and Encouragement Agency in Hamburg (Germany), ‘The cradle of Cradle to Cradle’. He is also co-founder of McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC) in Charlottesville, Virginia and founder of the Hamburger Environmental Institute (HUI). For decades, Prof. Dr. Michael Braungart has pioneered the Cradle to Cradle design concept. He has worked with a number of organizations and companies across a range of industries, and has developed tools for designing eco-effective products, business systems and intelligent materials pooling. In 2019 Michael Braungart was awarded the Goldene Blume von Rheydt (Golden Flower of Rheydt), the oldest environmental protection award in Germany, for his work.

Frank Spikker

CEO, Royal MOSA

An experienced CEO with competences in marketing, operations, and design in both B2B and B2C, Frank joined MOSA as CEO in 2018. He studied Business Administration/International Marketing at Radboud University Nijmegen and started his career at Philips Lighting. Here he worked in various positions within Marketing and General Management in Europe and Asia until 2011. In his last position at Philips, Frank Spikker was responsible for the Business Unit Professional Lighting Asia Pacific as CEO. Since January 2011 he was Group CEO of Halo Creative & Design Ltd. This English company with brands such as Timothy Oulton has built a global distribution network for handmade, luxurious furniture and lighting with a focus on style and design.

Patrick Speck

Leader, LIXIL Global Design, EMENA

Patrick Speck joined GROHE in 2006 and has held several senior positions in the design department. Becoming VP Design Transformation in 2018, he ensured LIXIL’s design vision was globally aligned across the brand portfolio. In 2020 Patrick was appointed to Leader LIXIL Global Design EMENA, with the purpose to deliver insight-driven and meaningful product solutions and ensuring the designs add real value to consumer lives. Before his career at LIXIL, he worked for global brands such as Electrolux, Zanussi, Rex and AEG.
